What are the health benefits of Cherries?

Scientists have learned that Antioxidants increase our resistance to disease and boost immunity and are essential to good health, especially with respect to aging and age related disorders.
The higher the ORAC value of food, the more antioxidant power it contains. So what is ORAC? ORAC stands for the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity of food. ORAC provides us with a method of measuring the overall antioxidant power of foods and supplements. The word "food" is significant, as scientists have found that antioxidants are most effective when received from a whole food; hence the recommended serving is 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Studies show that the average person gets only about 1200 ORAC units per day from 3 servings of fruits and vegetables. To provide a significant impact on health, current minimum recommendations are 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units per day.
We Love Cherries! Why?
- Cherries are full of antioxidants which have been shown to help fight diseases like cancer and heart disease.
- Cherries may reduce cancer risk by inhibiting tumor development and growth of human colon cancer cells. Cherries produce a phyto-nutrient called perillyl alcohol which many studies indicate may help rid the body of carcinogens that cause cells to divide rapidly, help revert tumor cells back to normal, and help reduce blood supply to cancer cells starving them of oxygen and nutrition to grow..
- Cherries aid in diabetes prevention by lowering cholesterol levels, increasing blood antioxidant capacity, reducing body fats, lowering insulin and fasting glucose levels, reducing ‘fatty liver’, and lowering levels of oxidative damage.
- Cherries are the only anti-inflammatory food known to reduce uric acid within the body; a known cause of gout and arthritic pain.
- Cherries contain melatonin which is acknowledged to fight jet lag by regulating the body’s biorhythm and natural sleep patterns.
- Cherries offer ‘heart-health’ benefits by providing the body with anthocyanins which lower blood lipids, thus reducing heart disease risks and metabolic syndrome traits associated with heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.
