For decades we have heard ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ and been told bananas are the superfood for workouts. Well make room in the fruit bowl because this recent publication shows that the health benefits of cherries span from reducing inflammation to better sleep and more. If you were looking for a reason to indulge in some more cherries, whether they be dried or wrapped in chocolate, read on.

Cherries reduce inflammation

A key finding from the review shows that consuming cherries can reduce inflammation and lessen the effects of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. Cherries contain high amounts of vitamin C and potassium as well as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In 11 out of 16 studies, inflammation was reduced after consuming cherries. Gout, a painful form of arthritis, was the focus of a study dating back to the 1950’s incorporating cherries as a treatment and preventative step. In a more recent study, gout patients saw a reduced risk of gout attacks after consuming cherries for just two days.

Cherries aid in muscle recovery

For those of you who regularly push yourselves to the limits with exercise and suffer from the post workout burn, there is great news. Conclusions show that consuming cherries reduces exercise-induced muscle pain and soreness in 8 out of 9 studies. Simply adding a serving of cherries to your daily routine could ease that post workout discomfort.

Cherries promote healthy sleep

Eating right and getting an appropriate amount of rest are cornerstone to a healthy lifestyle. Additional findings show that melatonin, tryptophan and serotonin can be sourced from cherries. Melatonin is an antioxidant commonly known for its relationship to sleep regulation. Naturally, studies show that the consumption of cherries had a direct correlation on improved sleep quality as well as quantity. Tryptophan, melatonin and serotonin also play a role in feelings of wellbeing. Research shows benefits of improved mood and cognitive functions associated with consumption of cherries.

Cherries can lower blood pressure

Lastly, evidence shows that regular consumption of sweet cherries may have a direct impact on specific vasoconstrictors that narrow blood vessels and constrict flow, as well as vasodilators, which help widen blood vessels and bring blood pressure down. Regular consumption of cherries can aid in the regulation of these compounds. Research is ongoing to show cherries’ impact on diabetes.
